Your Guide

Robert Joe Studdard grew up in Cotter, Arkansas, on the banks of the White River. He was on the water with his parents before he could walk, and he came up alongside a tight group of childhood friends who came from long lines of river guides.
After years working as a boilermaker rebuilding refineries across the country, he came home to do the work he was raised for. Today, with over a decade of guiding behind him, he works the White River full-time out of the town that built him.

Each season on this tailwater brings something different. Robert Joe knows exactly what the fish are eating and where they're holding — month by month, condition by condition.
Peak season for monster trout: January through June. Book early — these dates fill fast.
The year kicks off with the brown trout spawn. Big browns are active and aggressive — one of the most productive windows of the entire year.
Shad kills push down from Bull Shoals Lake, creating feeding frenzies. Fish stack up and feed hard on easy prey. This window doesn't last long.
The notorious Caddis hatches arrive. Surface activity picks up dramatically — some of the most exciting fishing of the year for light tackle anglers.
Hot weather shifts feeding patterns. Fish key in on crawdads, minnows, sculpins, and hoppers. Presentation and patience are everything.
The lake turns over, producing smaller shad kills. Leaves change on the Ozark hillsides. Fish begin staging for the spawn again.
Browns begin pre-spawn movement. Water temps drop and fish become more active. A quieter time on the river with serious potential.
How Robert Joe Fishes
Each day on the White River is different — the dam controls everything, and the fish respond accordingly. Robert Joe's core philosophy is simple: mimic the bait naturally flowing down the river with perfect presentation. Do that with patience, and it pays off time and time again.
The drift is everything. Placing the bait in the right seam, at the right depth, at the right speed — that's the skill that separates a good day from a great one. Robert Joe has spent his life perfecting it.
Robert Joe's #1 Tip to Clients
"Simply don't overthink it. Trust the process even if it doesn't make sense. When I say that's a bite — don't question it."
